How does Pingdom perform its uptime checks and choose locations to test from?

There are currently four groups (probe regions) you can set your Uptime checks to be monitored from:

  1. Default (North America and Europe)
  2. North America
  3. Europe
  4. APAC (Australia and Asia)

After selecting a probe group, our system will select about 10 different probe servers as geographically varied as possible to monitor your site. These servers will in rotation test your website or server, so if you're not seeing a specific probe server or country in the reports it isn't part of the selected servers within the group.

However, the set of servers monitoring your website may change over a longer period of time (due to server maintenance or new additions), so you might be seeing the specific server/country you want in a couple of months of adding the uptime check, otherwise the rotation of servers is fixed after creating the check.

If you use IPv6 the site will be tested by a selection of IPv6 probe servers within the region you selected.

Probe selection by an individual location is and will unfortunately not be possible, as this would remove our ability to take out a malfunctioning probe server from rotation and perform regular maintenance without interfering with the service.

What will most likely happen in the future is that we will add regions and the like to allow narrowing down the locations even further.
