Monitoring availability and/or response time from a MS Sql-server instance
Some of our customers uses our host MS SQL server as backend for their Windows based clients and are not interested in whether our web-based client is available or not.
Monitoring the availability and response time directly on the SQL instance would be very useful.
To avoid installing any gadgets on the server itself I guess logging in to the SQL server service and calling a predefined stored procedure would be the proper solution. It would require only server IP and port, SQL username and password to run a builtin stored procedure. Or if more customized an optional database name and name of users own stored procedure (Would make it possible for the server admin to invoke queries that may tell if the server is tired or just return I'm alive.)
